THE RISHAM SARAO SIXTH FORM CENTRE APPEAL

We have already raised over 30% of the 1.5m target to build a state-of-the-art Sixth Form Centre. In keeping with the School aims, we plan to build a specialist centre to prepare our Sixth Form students for life beyond school.

The Risham Sarao Sixth Form Centre will:

• Provide a dedicated space for our Sixth Form students to study
• Be a centre for university and careers resources, where students will be able to receive advice and support from specialist staff
• Expand our provision for independent study, collaborative learning and research
• Provide a valuable Sixth Form social space

The Risham Sarao Sixth Form Centre project will be the most ambitious fundraising campaign in the history of Chigwell School and the first to specifically benefit Sixth Formers. Although the target of £1,500,000 will be immensely challenging for the School to raise through its own endeavours, we have no doubt that, with the enthusiastic help of our supporters, it is achievable.

This exciting project has already had a great start thanks to a most generous pledge from the family of Risham Sarao. Risham, who was an outstanding Chigwell student, died at the age of 21 in a tragic road accident in Peru. She was, in the words of her Aunt, Mrs Sukjit Sohi, ‘a true product of Chigwell’.

Risham’s family wish to create a permanent memorial so that her name will live on through a facility that will help future generations of Chigwell students. They have pledged £100,000 towards the building of the Sixth Form Centre. Please unite with them in this venture and donate as much as you can.

Adjacent to the Sports Hall, the Sixth Form Centre will enjoy superb views of the School grounds and Epping Forest beyond them.

The School Development Programme

In recent years, the rapid growth of the School has been matched by an extensive building and refurbishment programme, mostly funded by the School's own resources. In addition to the Drama Centre and the All-Weather Pitch, this has included the acquisition of Radley's Yard in 2006 as a teaching and study centre; the refurbishment of New Hall in 2006, with the generous help of the Friends of Chigwell; the construction of the Wilson Building, officially opened in 2009; a much extended and improved Junior School Library, completed in August 2009; new kitchens, formally opened in September 2010 and the improvement and re-structuring of boarding facilities for Sixth Form boys. Future plans include the opening of a Pre Prep School. However, we need your help to ensure that future generations of Chigwellians can continue to receive the highest standards of education in the best possible environment through the development of a Sixth Form Centre. Please support the Risham Sarao Sixth Form Centre Appeal as generously as you can.

Annual Giving

In addition to our Priority Campaign for the Sixth Form Centre, the School‘s Annual Fund provides the opportunity to parents, Old Chigwellians and friends to raise funds to support the School in many different ways. The Chigwell Annual Fund supports:

Our students – providing means-tested bursaries to ensure that deserving pupils, regardless of financial background, can benefit from a Chigwell education.

The continual development of the School – providing resources to maintain, preserve and develop the School’s buildings, academic, cultural and sports facilities.

Donations can be earmarked to benefit a specific project or aspects of life here at Chigwell. If your gift is directed to this category, it will be used where the School considers it can be put to the best use and provide maximum benefit to the Chigwell Community.

For details of where to direct gifts for the Annual Fund, please contact Loredana Morrison at the Development Office, telephone: 020 8501 5748, email: lmorrison@chigwell-school.org.

Ways of giving

Single Gifts: every gift makes a difference
If you wish to make single donation you can do so by cheque, electronic fund transfer, credit or debit card or Charity Aid Foundation vouchers. All gifts are most welcome. Single gifts remain the most popular way for many Chigwellians to contribute to the future of the School. If you wish o make a Single Gift, please fill in the relevant section in the downloadable Donation Form and return it to the School Development Office.

Regular Giving by Standing Order Mandate
A Regular Gift provides a secure footing to plan ahead for the future and allows the donor to make payments when most suitable: monthly, quarterly or annually. If you wish to make a Regular Gift by Standing Order, please fill in the relevant section in the downloadable Donation Form and return it to the School Development Office, and not to your Bank.

Increase the value of your donations with Gift Aid
Making a gift of any size using the Gift Aid scheme enables Chigwell School, as a registered charity, to reclaim from the Government the basic rate of tax on your gift (currently 20%), which you will already have paid. This means an extra 25p for every £1 donated, at no extra cost to you. As an example, gift aid would increase a £3,000 donation to £3,750.

If you are a basic rate taxpayer, it stops there. But if you are a higher rate tax payer, you can claim the difference between the higher rates of tax (40 and/ or 50 per cent), and the basic rate of tax (20 per cent), on the total ‘gross’ value of your donation to the School. For example, if you donate £100, the total value of your donation to the School is £125, so you can claim back:

  • £25 if you pay tax at 40 per cent
  • £37.50 if you pay tax at 50 per cent (£125 at 20 per cent plus £125 at 10 per cent)

  • You can make this claim on your Self-Assessment tax return.

Please consider a Gift Aid donation wherever possible. If you are unsure whether your donation qualifies for Gift Aid, we will be pleased to advise you. Please contact the Development Office at the address below.

    Corporate giving
Companies can get tax relief on gifts of money to charities such as Chigwell School. When a company makes a qualifying donation to Chigwell School, the amount paid is treated as a 'non-trade charge' - this means that the company can make a claim in its Company Tax Return to set the amount of the donation against its taxable profits.
The company should keep normal accounting records to support entries on the Company Tax Return along with any other relevant documentation, for example correspondence with the School in relation to the donation such as a 'thank you' letter.

    US Residents
If you reside and pay taxes in the US, you can make a tax-efficient gift to Chigwell School thanks to the British Schools and Universities Foundation. For further information please go to the page How you can help or visit the BSUF’s website on www. bsuf.org
