Rotary Youth Speaks Debating Competition

Chigwell’s Senior Public Speaking team competed at the regional final of the Rotary Youth Speaks competition in Ipswich.  The team, consisting of Matilda Scarborough (Chairperson), Christopher Collins (Speaker) and Ziyad Chaudhary (Vote of Thanks) defended themselves most admirably against senior teams from the Perse, Hitchin Boys School and Bishop’s Stortford College. The quality of all teams was exceptionally high; the three rival teams were comprised of sixth form students but our year 10 team more than held its own in terms of maturity and presence.  Christopher’s speech on whether the monarchy is an outdated concept was received with rapturous applause by the adjudicators and audience.  Mrs Emma Rea, Head of English, commented “We were delighted when the team was successful in winning the heat.”  Chigwell now proceeds to the National Final in Telford on 7th May.
